So…I woke up this morning, and took something out to the car. On a whim, I circled the car one more time…you know, since it was daylight and all…and what do you know. There was a Nexus 7 tablet.

I’d like to think that the would-be thief suffered a round of guilt and brought the Nexus 7 back to its rightful owner (oddly leaving it face down on in some leaves on the sidewalk next to my car); but something tells me that’s not what happened. Now, my feelings move from victimization to embarrassment. I appreciate those who expressed concern last night, especially my son who searched the car for me and gave me a couple of hugs. Thanks, in advance, to all of you for not riding me too hard about this [honest] mistake. At least I have the Nexus 7 in hand. If nothing else, I went through a little fire drill changing all of my passwords and updating my online security settings.
Please excuse me while I go make some toast to go with that egg.

I’m so happy it wasn’t stolen! One Sunday afternoon Pat and I were driving home from my parents and stopped on the shoulder of 66 because we heard this noise coming from the car. Nothing was found and the mysterious noise stopped when we drove off. Hours after we got home, Pat realized he lost his wallet. We retraced our steps and turned the house upside down looking for it. It was nowhere to be found. Before calling the credit card companies, we were going to go back to the area we stopped at on the highway hoping it was still there. Just as we approached the car, there was his wallet. On the front lawn.
I’m not sure if there’s a word for feeling embarrassed, angry, and elated at the same time, but that’s what we felt. Bro, we all do this sometimes. I’m glad you found your Nexus 7. I wish is was there to see your happy dance!
One good thing came out of this. I rarely enable the lock screen on my devices. I will now do that. I’m also going to use Google’s 2-step authentication.
Too funny about Pat’s wallet. I’m glad that he found it — in the front yard, no less. Carla intimated that I didn’t have enough trust in my fellow man. I was like, “Whatever! The theft was plausible.”
As I get the Nexus 7 back up and running, adding a lock screen is first step. Even though it’s probably the best thing for protecting my account, I actually don’t care for the two-step authentication. There are so many hoops to jump through on different devices. Add to that, you have to reauthenticate every 30 days. That’s as bad as work (well…before PIV cards).
For what it’s worth — My happy dance didn’t really come out because the “You idiot!” head slap stole the moment.
